Superb boxed George II Scottish silver coconut cup C1740 by Charles Dickson

This George II Scottish silver coconut cup was made C1740 and is marked under the foot with the makers mark of Edinburgh silversmith Charles Dickson, it measures 5 inches to the rim and is 3.75 inches in dia across the top and 3 3/16 inches across the foot, it has a silver rim around the top and a silver trumpet foot with acanthus leaf cut outs where it attaches to the coconut, it also has 4 leaf shaped pieces applied to the rim and it has a lovely scrolled handle, there is one old fissure to one side but not distracting and stable, it comes inside a very well made and fitted box which is lined with Royal blue velvet and satin and brass fittings. There is an engraved inscription to the top rim which reads

THIS CUP WAS THE PROPERTY OF JOHN GARDEN ESQ (A FARMER) OF BURGH HILL BRECHIN WHO DIED AGED 63 (1705 – APRIL 1768)

AND THE FOOT IS ENGRAVED

THIS CUP ON THE DEMISE OF F.G.MITCHELL PRESENTED TO JAMES KIRKWOOD BY MISS I POOLE ON THE 16TH ANNIVERSARY OF H.B.KIRKWOODS BIRTHDAY PRESENTED BY HIS FATHER TO HIM.

There is also further history on a sheet of paper which is included. A very nice cup in very good condition obviously very well thought of and contained in a super box.
