This superb pair of crested George II silver sauce or gravy boats were made in London in 1753 by John Pollock and measure 8 inches handle to spout by almost 4 inches at their widest and are almost 5 inches tall to the top of the handle, the cast and scrolled handles are fashioned as dolphins and they have cast shell shouldered legs with stepped feet and are crested under the lip with an eagles head and the motto above of PIETAS TUTTISSIMA VIRTUS (piety is the surest virtue – the Ainslie family) , they have shaped borders with 6 flutes to each body, they are fully and clearly hallmarked under the bases and weigh 26.50 ounces or 824 grams and are in excellent condition, a good large pair of boats.
